Most businesses assume that if they rank well in Google… they’ll also be recommended by AI.
That’s not how it works.
What I’m about to show you is the exact same business, looked at through two different systems.
And the results are very different.
When we search for trail running races in Ottawa, Google’s AI Overview pulls together what it believes are the most relevant and trusted options.

Google’s AI includes The Mad Trapper multiple times—and is the only direct link available in the summary.
Now let’s look at the standard Google results for the same topic.

Traditional search ranks pages—not necessarily the businesses behind them.
Here are the key differences:
My GUIDE PAGE ranks well
But my actual races don’t dominate the results, none of my races are on page 1 or 2 of a Google search
Larger organizations, like Run Ottawa and Spartan, and directories, still control most visibility and dominate page 1.
This is the exact reason I built a race guide, with links to my competitors, on my website. To "hack" my way into SEO.
This is where most SEO strategies stop.
They focus on ranking content, not on being recommended.
Now let’s look at the same search through ChatGPT.

ChatGPT doesn’t just list options—it recommends what it believes is best.
This is where things change:
The Mad Trapper is ranked #1 overall, in both race series and individual race.
It appears multiple times in the results
It’s positioned as the top local choice
This isn’t just visibility.
👉 This is recommendation
Google shows pages.
AI recommends businesses.
And those are not the same thing.
You can:
Rank in Google… and still not be recommended
Be recommended by AI… without dominating traditional search
That’s because AI isn’t just looking for:
Keywords
Backlinks
Technical SEO
It’s asking a different question:
👉 “Which business is the clearest, most trustworthy answer for this?”
Here’s what most people miss:
The Mad Trapper is a small, grassroots race series. In over 20 years, it hasn’t seen the number of participants that Ottawa Race Weekend gets in a single weekend.
By every traditional measure, it shouldn’t compete.
And yet…
👉 It shows up multiple times in AI results
👉 It gets recommended alongside—and above—much larger organizations. (Think about it... which have you heard about more? Spartan races or the Mad Trapper???)
That changes the game.
You don’t have to be:
The biggest
The most established
Or the one with the biggest marketing budget
To be recommended by AI.
AI isn’t looking for the biggest brand.
It’s looking for the clearest answer.
That means:
Who is this for?
What exactly do you offer?
Why does it matter?
If that’s clear…
👉 AI can understand you
👉 AI can trust you
👉 AI can recommend you
Most businesses are doing the work:
Investing in SEO
Creating content
Running ads
But their message is:
Unclear
Inconsistent
Or buried under tactics
So even if they’re visible…
👉 They’re not understood
And if AI doesn’t understand your business…
👉 It won’t recommend you
This is the window most businesses haven’t seen yet.
Because AI is still evolving…
👉 clarity beats size
👉 structure beats budget
👉 message beats tactics
And that’s why a small, independent race series
can outperform organizations 1,000 times its size.

Most marketing focuses on getting you:
More traffic
More clicks
More likes
More visibility
But that’s not what you actually want.
👉 You want more clients
👉 You want more sales
👉 You want people choosing you
The problem is… Most marketing is built around tactics. But AI doesn’t recommend tactics.
👉 It recommends businesses it understands and trusts.
Empathic Marketing® is not a tactic.
It’s a system built around one core idea:
👉 If your message is clear enough, the right people—and AI—will recognize it immediately.
Inside Empathic Marketing, everything is built on three things:
Avatar — who this is really for
Message — what actually makes them care
Delivery — how it reaches them at the right moment
When those are aligned…
👉 your marketing stops feeling like effort
👉 and starts producing clients

This is a short, practical call for business owners who want more than rankings and traffic.
In 15 minutes, I’ll look at how clearly your business is positioned online and where AI tools like ChatGPT may be getting confused, missing key trust signals, or overlooking what makes you the right choice.
You’ll leave with clear next steps to improve both your AI visibility and your ability to turn that visibility into real clients.
What we'll accomplish:
A quick look at how your business currently appears to AI
The biggest messaging or trust gaps hurting recommendations
1 to 3 practical fixes to improve visibility and conversions
A better sense of whether my service is the right fit
AI visibility is how likely your business is to be found, understood, and recommended by tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, and other AI search engines.
It is not just about ranking in Google. It is about making your business clear enough, trustworthy enough, and relevant enough that AI can confidently mention you as a good option.
Traditional SEO often focuses on rankings, keywords, backlinks, and technical structure.
AI visibility still benefits from those things, but it goes further. AI tools are trying to recommend the best answer, not just the highest-ranking page.
That means your positioning, message clarity, trust signals, and how clearly you speak to the right buyer all matter.
Yes. They already recommend businesses, service providers, events, and local options every day.
But there is no button you press to guarantee it.
The businesses most likely to be recommended are the ones AI can easily understand, trust, and explain.
In my experience, AI is more likely to recommend businesses that have:
- clear positioning
- strong website messaging
- specific service pages
- visible trust signals
- consistent information online
- authority and relevance in their niche
- content that answers real buyer questions
That is why I do not treat AI visibility like a technical trick. I treat it like a clarity and trust problem first.
Empathic Marketing is my system for understanding the buyer deeply enough that the message becomes clearer, stronger, and more relevant.
When your business clearly speaks to the right person, the right problem, and the right outcome, two things happen:
- real people understand you faster
- AI can understand and recommend you more easily
That is why I use Empathic Marketing as the foundation for AI visibility and client conversion.
On the audit, I take a quick look at how your business appears online and where AI may be getting confused, missing trust signals, or failing to see what makes you the right choice.
You will leave with a clearer sense of:
- how recommendable your business appears right now
- what may be hurting your visibility
- what to improve first
- whether I am the right fit to help
My focus is not visibility for visibility’s sake.
The goal is to help your business become easier to understand, easier to trust, and easier to choose.
That means the work is meant to improve both your chances of being recommended by AI and your chances of turning that attention into actual clients.
This is best for business owners who already have a real offer, a real business, and a real desire to grow, but whose message may not be as clear or as persuasive as it needs to be.
It is especially useful for service businesses, local businesses, experts, and founder-led brands where trust, clarity, and positioning matter.
